Driving with a Suspended License

If you are pulled over, and found to be operating a motor vehicle while your driver's license is suspended, then you could face extremely harsh penalties. A first offense can result in up to 30 days in jail and a $300 fine, and a second offense can result in up to 60 days in jail and up to a $600 fine. If you are charged with a third or subsequent offense of driving with a suspended license, then you could face up to $1,000 in fines and up to six months in jail. There are many various reasons why your license may be suspended.

South Carolina has a point system that determines license suspension. If you accumulate six points, then the DMV will notify you of the consequences of license suspension, and request you to drive more carefully. If you accumulate 12 or more points, then your driver's license will be suspended, and the DMV will notify you of this. One year after the offense that incurred points against your license, the points will be cut in half, and after two years, the points will be removed altogether. There are many cases where you license may be suspended and you may be completely unaware due to a failure to read the notice provided by the DMV.
